The Waterfront Challenge

Standard

Yesterday was a very strange day from start to finish.

Ranger Rabbit and I have never left on time for anything since kids, and we have come to say that is how it is we set times earlier! So the car is packed 3 kids over night bags, race bags, water it was all ready (so we think). Drop the kids off at my Great Aunts and head out.

Our 1st stop is to a running store on the way, its not far from home but we never go north for some reason we always go to Nashville. We LOVE that store and our next pair of shoes will be from them, I have my eye on a pair of trail shoes ….  they are the great. To boot they are friends with a couple that are friends with us. Ranger Rabbit is trying to get the owners to go run a Spartan .. no thanks I am out on that one.

We set off to Louisville, its only 2 hours from this point and the road is always got construction or bad crashes often (reason for leaving early) but make it in recored time, and get to the river front in no time flat as it was just a few blocks over from the KFC ? YUM Center that Danger Daughter had Archery at.

We have 2 hours before the race even starts and 3 hours before our wave, so we are walk the park drinking our water and looking at the course, having a great time kidless. AS that never happens that we go off with out them. Walking over to the to check in table , I am struck over the amount of homeless people sleeping or just in the park and glad Ranger Rabbit was with me, as well he was Infantry many moons ago and still scary!  We walk down by the river to the sign in table and a homeless man stops in front of us and starts peeing on a park bench!  Ranger Rabbit hand singles me to move to the other side but everything was ok, just odd. In all my trips to Nashville I never have had issues with the homeless doing things like that in front of me. there is more but I will get to in in a while with this topic.

The race, I hated it. I had a cramp in my side cotton mouth and I was pissed that I was doing it at all. I am used to treadmill, track or roads NOT  this running up and down man made levees, it mad me so made and I could never get a good breathing pattern. The crawling, tires course, tire carry, the running over picnic tables , over semi trailers, 10 lbs of weights over your head or even the 20 push ups with a Drill Sargent yelling at me, was bad as the darn hills!  I remember thinking at one point going WHY are you not crying yet? I tend to cry when I am pissed  or disappointed. I was very disappointed in myself for not running, and seeing all the thin people passing me like I was nothing, or seeing the people clapping for me and I kept thinking you are doing that because its your job to cheer people on but why cheer me as I am fat and I can’t run. I just kept thinking I don’t have it in me to cry why? This is not like your self why?

Ranger Rabbit did it 30is mins, and I was very much slower then that, but you know I am ok with it, I never wanted to run as fast as him. He did it for years, I am just starting after letting myself go. The wife card or the mother card or the something other then i need to be me card was always the next card dealt.

I got my medal and I am proud I got it even if i did walk most of that damed course with the damed hills, I felt great when it was hung around my neck, and I got my bottle of water that had Army Logo on it, and it downed on me WHY I did not cry, a Sargent saw me holding my side and puffing and he said “pain is weakness leaving your body” I know Ranger Rabbit has said that to me many times, but he has to say that as he loves me, this man did not know me from Adem, and I kept going saying I will be faster next year.

Ranger Rabbit and I skipped out on the after party, we had to get home! Life with kids there is always something going on, and Ranger Rabbit was taking the Middle Man rock crawling.  We are walking back to the car kinda as my cool down, and Ranger Rabbit had snagged some water bottles from the Army Booth and we both got a bottle from the race it’s self both have a good stroll back to teh car drinking water, and making plans for next year.

We get up to the car, and a man (homeless) comes up and asks for water, and if we would give him a bottle. Watching Ranger Rabbits stance I moved to where I am away from him and in to a place I can run if need be, but I am so glad it was not that way, he just handed him one of the half empty bottles (sport bottles mind you) he’ed been drinking and the man walked off with it.  THEN we had a different man to yell at us that we are in his spot, that is where he lived !  We had plans to go over to the Subway to grab some grub but ended up getting the heck out of there it was crazy.

We get out of Louisville and we are starving and I see a Waffle House sign and say that HAS to be a normal as we met all kinda of crazies in the park. I do believe that was the best meal I have eaten in a long time. This country gal loves her grits…oh so good.  We sat and talked about what our day had been like and what time we would be getting in, who would drive, just talk I guess. It was very nice as we do not get that many times we get to just talk and be husband and wife, with out a parent or something more

All and All it was a good day, and I am ready to run it next year, maybe take some self defense classes just cause of the crazy homeless dudes that seem to be abundant
